Breakfast in a bus, lunch in a gas station
That’s right kids. We had breakfast in a bus, lunch in a gas station, and we LOVED it.

Now Kelly will no doubt write about this more eloquently on BussBuss (which I know you all read because you are dailybuss and RSS feed subscribers, right?) but we had a fantastic time on our 2nd trip to Marfa TX.
Marfa has a hipster / artist culture. Now for those of you who know me, you understand that I am a straight arrow German type, not exactly a hipster. That said, I recognize that many hipsters are just more fun than I am. Luckily for us, a hipster culture in Marfa also translates into a great food culture. And for those of you who know me and Kelly, you know that we love food! Specifically Kelly loves to order it, and I love to eat it. It works out, but I need to spend more time on the bike if this is going to keep going on like this.
So, back to the bus and the gas station.
Hipsters in Marfa realized that an outdoor food stand like “The food shark” can’t do well in the winter when its sixteen degrees at night, and twenty something during the day. So, the owner of the food stand did the logical thing. He bought an old school bus and turned it into a dining car. Genius.
We shared a great falafel for breakfast and were warm and happy, despite the 25 degree temperatures outside.

Funnily enough, we also were passed on the road by the Food Shark a few hours later. Not often you are passed by a kitchen.

After the Food Shark, we looked around a bit and then went to the Pizza Foundation, which Kelly says was some of the best pizza she ever had. I would agree that at least its the best gas station food I have ever had (sorry gas station in Italy that I took Kelly too 9 years ago, and gas station in France that we went to last year.) and possibly the best pizza.

In Marfa, we also saw a lot of neat houses that you really wouldn’t expect to see in the middle of west Texas.

These types of places make me really think, hmm, I could live here… maybe?
Of course in Marfa and the surrounding area we also saw a lot of stuff that made us realize that other people had that kind of crazy thought too, but their dreams didn’t work out so well.

We saw a lot of other things which didn’t quite make sense, but we loved every minute of it.

Really, a castle??

Another gas station restaurant? Excuse me sir, can I have some 10w30 and vinegar for my bread?

This says its a US Air Force installation.
We also visited Kelly’s favorite Prada store.

That had her jumping for joy. (Check out that vertical! Watch out #23.)

The day for us wrapped up with some great scenic views, followed by a fantastic sunset.

Sorry to my mom who was on the phone with us while I took the sunset pictures, I hope you think they were worth it.
Today we are going to enjoy the open road, and then wander off again into the middle of nowhere.

If you can stand more pics, as usual, they are all right here.

Looking at the surroundings through your camera’s eye is fantastic!!! I’m sure I would not have the same reaction if I were looking at it through my eyes. Great camera job…keep it up.
